Use this guide if you’re utilizing our DYMO integration with the DYMO Web Connect Service for your label printer.
⚡️ Important Note: As of August 8, 2022 we are phasing out the DYMO Integration with DYMO Web Connect Service which has been causing connectivity issues with our hospitals and their DYMO equipment. We are happy to announce that we have a new solution that allows you to use any model DYMO LabelWriter or Zebra Label Printers, as well as supporting 3 DYMO brand label options that are easy to find at any office supply store. Visit our PDF Label Printing Guide for more details.

What You’ll Need to Get Started
First, you’ll want to make sure you have the following items on hand and installed:
- Hardware: DYMO 450 Label Printer
- Required Labels: These labels (3-1/2” x 1-15/16”) are the only labels currently supported. Please note that other label types/sizes will not print correctly
- Software: An Instinct compatible DYMO Driver/Software installed on every computer (see below)

⚡ Important Note: the newest DYMO Connect Driver in v1.4 have not been tested with Instinct and may not be compatible. Please refer to the drivers listed in the above image when checking your driver version and download an older driver from the compatibility chart.
Printing Prescriptions from Instinct on a PC
- Install the v1.3 DYMO Driver/Software on every computer that will be printing labels.
- The label printer will need to be shared on your network in order to print from Instinct on other computers:
- Select the Start button, then select Settings > Devices > Printers & scanners.
- Choose the printer you want to share, then select Manage.

- Select Printer Properties, then choose the Sharing tab.

- On the Sharing tab, select Share this printer.

- Important: The “Share name” needs to be unique across all DYMO printers on your network (i.e. Pharmacy, Treatment Room, etc).
- Once the above steps have been performed, insert 3-1/2” x 1-15/16” labels (like these) into the printer (label side down). Please note – we only support this specific label size.
- Make sure your DYMO 450 is plugged into one computer on your network.
Printing Prescriptions from Instinct on a Mac
- Install the v8.7 DYMO Driver/Software on every computer that will be printing labels.
- Open the install file and complete the installation process.
- You may see a pop-up asking permission for the extension to run. Once granted, plug in your DYMO printer to confirm it’s working.

A few things to keep in mind:
- You can print from any computer (Windows or Mac) as long as the DYMO printer is connected to a computer on the same network.
- If you are interested in printing over your network, see page 15 of the DYMO user guide.
- The labels are installed in the printer with the label side down (there’s also a diagram on the inside of the printer that shows which way the spool goes).
- If your practice doesn’t have an available computer to attach a label printer to, DYMO sells a small print server to make your printer available over the network.

Instinct DYMO Printer Management
EMR hospitals with the Rx feature can view all available DYMO printers in the Admin section of Instinct, under the Practice heading. This list is device-specific and will only look identical from one computer to another if printers are set up the same way in both places.
Any printers currently available through the DYMO web service will automatically display in the list. If the DYMO Web Service stops running on a computer, all printers will be removed from the Admin screen and Instinct- the service must be running to see a list of printers available.

When printing, if DYMO’s web service reports only one printer, Instinct will print directly to it. Hovering over the print button displays the printer name in a tooltip.

If DYMO’s web service reports multiple printers, you will see a dropdown trigger on the print button. Clicking the main body of the button will send the label to the last DYMO printer used (per label type, Rx or patient label). Use the dropdown list to select other available printers.

If DYMO’s web service reports no available printers, Print buttons will be disabled. Buttons that print as a side-effect, like Prescribe, will remain usable but show an error message afterwards related to the lack of available printers. The Admin screen will display a message and a link to visit the Setup/Troubleshooting DYMO article in Careville. Patient Label and Rx features also display messaging stating printers are not available.

🚨 Troubleshooting Tips
⚡ Important Note: due to the lengthy, and oftentimes unsuccessful, troubleshooting process below, we are phasing out this DYMO Integration with DYMO Web Connect Service which has been causing connectivity issues with our hospitals and their DYMO equipment. If you continue to experience issues with your DYMO printer and Instinct, please visit our PDF Label Printing Guide for more details on how to request to be placed on our new printing option.
- Restarting your computer will restart the DYMO services, resolving most issues!
- On some occasions, simply unplugging the printer and plugging it back in to your computer will resolve connectivity issues.
- Make sure the DYMO printer is available in the computer’s printer list
- Go into the computer’s printer/devices settings and make sure the DYMO printer is visible and the checkbox is marked to share via network. Printer status of ‘idle’ is fine.
- If the DYMO printer is not showing up on the computer’s printer list, it will need to be escalated to your IT person.
- Make sure your DYMO software has not automatically updated to v1.4. If it has, please re-install with v1.3 (Windows) or v8.7 (Mac) using the DYMO compatibility chart.
- Please make sure DYMO Connect Web Service is running on each computer that wants to print from Instinct. On Windows, the web service must run with User permissions, not Administrator, and you can check this by simply hovering your mouse over the thumbnail icon (a tooltip should appear showing ‘user’ or ‘administrator’). If you are running as Administrator, you can quit the DYMO Connect Web Service and open it back up or restart your workstation.

- If you click ‘Diagnose’ as shown above and receive the following SSL error message, we’d recommend uninstalling and re-installing DYMO Connect.

- DYMO provides the required web service in the bundle called “DYMO Connect for Desktop” on Windows and “DYMO Label™” on macOS. This bundle includes an app for designing labels, the web service, some custom fonts, and a Microsoft Word Add-in. On Windows, the Complete install option is the simplest choice but if you decide to use a Custom install, please make sure the ‘DYMO Connect’ and ‘DYMO Connect Web Service’ are included (labels will not print otherwise).

- To confirm your computer is connected to a DYMO printer, you can open up your Task Manager and search for: DYMO.WebApi.Win.Host. If this does not show up, please re-install the DYMO Driver.
- If your LabelWriter prints one or more blank labels before / after / in between correctly printed labels, or the labels to not align correctly (printing starts or stops in the middle of a label), press the feed button on the front of your LabelWriter printer. If it advances more than one label, or it does not advance a full label, then it is most likely caused by a label issue. In this case, please confirm that the labels have been loaded correctly and that you are also using genuine DYMO labels.
- If you no longer have a printer and it’s still displaying in Instinct after being removed; delete the printer from your printer list on your computer. If it’s still showing in Instinct, follow these steps.
- If needed, you have the option to Print Single PDF Label which will print a prescription label to your DYMO Printer.
