💡 Heska Point-of-Care Diagnostics Integration at a Glance
When a Heska point-of-care laboratory order is completed on the Treatment Sheet, the following will happen:
- The completed order triggers a request to the laboratory machine.
- A new Diagnostic Chart document is created automatically in the Charts section.
- The Diagnostic Chart document is updated automatically once results are available.
📓 Please Note: To set up a new Heska point-of-care device connected to Instinct, please contact us at support@instinct.vet. Once integrated with Instinct, laboratory orders are managed by your hospital administrator team.
🔬 Scheduling and Completing Heska Point-of-Care Laboratory Treatments
You can schedule and complete laboratory treatments like any other treatment in Instinct. Point-of-care specific treatments display a diagnostics icon on both the Order tab and line item on the TX screen as shown below:

🚨 Test Tube Icon not displaying when ordering in the Treatment Order form? If the Test Tube Icon is not appearing next to the Heska product name in the Treatment Order form, the product has not been mapped to the Heska Integration. Please reach out to support@instinct.vet to have the product mapped! Don’t forget to include the product PIMS ID and Product Label.
Clicking View Results for each completed laboratory treatment opens the corresponding laboratory results chart document on the right side.

📈 Laboratory Treatments – Chart Screen
When a laboratory treatment is completed, a new Diagnostic Chart document is automatically created for the current visit.
The status of the Chart document will either say Requested if results are not yet completed, or Received if results are returned (visible in real time).

👓 Viewing Laboratory Results
To view laboratory results, simply click the corresponding Chart document to open the results via the side pane on the right side of the screen.
Requested
If the Diagnostic Chart is in a Requested status, a Pending Results image is displayed until the results are available. You’ll also see the assigned doctor at the time the treatment was completed and the date, time, and user who completed the treatment in the footer.

Received
If the Diagnostic Chart is in a Received status, an overview of the laboratory treatment is displayed along with received results.

🚨 IMPORTANT NOTE: Results may be sent all at once or in several stages. Point-of-care diagnostics will not send a ‘Completed’ notification and it will be up to the doctor to understand when the results are complete.
If needed, the Doctor field can be edited on the laboratory results chart document at any time. If edited, it will not update the doctor on the laboratory treatment order on the treatment sheet.

🧪 Laboratory Document Fields (above the results)

- Source: Name of the integrated laboratory.
- Test: Test type(s) that have received results.
- Species: Species assigned to the patient through Patient Registration.
- Sample: Date/time (on the hour) the laboratory treatment was received.
- Treatment: Clicking View Treatment displays the Completion screen on the Treatment Sheet.
🧬Laboratory Document Results
Results are displayed under the laboratory overview by test Type. For example, a CBC test may include Hematology results followed by Chemistry results.
A Results drop-down is available to view any initial/pending results by date if needed (displayed in reverse chronological order). A Void button is displayed next to the Results drop down field to void a laboratory test. This option is covered in more detail in the “Void and Undo Void” category below.

Any notes associated with the laboratory test will be displayed under the Results drop-down.

As shown above, results are displayed below the following columns: Label, Result, Low and High.
Received results will also display Results Updated along with the date and time results are received.

✍️Editing Lab Integration Chart Document Names
Chart Document Names can be edited by clicking on the Chart document to open up the document on the right – side of the screen. Hover over and click on the Chart document name to start editing.
When done with editing, click on the orange checkmark to save.
🛑 Void and Undo Void
Attachments within the Lab Integration Chart Document:
Void and Undo Void is allowed within the Lab Integration Chart document using the 3-dot menu next to the Attachment. However, this only Voids the Attachment within Instinct. To undo a Void, simply click Undo Void.
Each test type (Hematology, Chemistry, Coagulation, etc.) can be voided individually if needed. If Void is clicked, results will still be visible but crossed out with a date/time the void occurred under the Results drop-down.

Once Void is selected, a reason for voiding the document needs to be entered to continue.
Once the document is Voided, it will be greyed out and can be filtered from the list of current Chart Documents. To Undo the Void, simply use the 3-dot menu to the left of the Chart Name and select Undo Void.
💡 ProTip: Voided results are displayed underneath any active results. If there are multiple voided results, they will display in reverse chronological order AFTER any active results and subsequent sets.
To undo a void, simply click Undo Void to display the results without the text being crossed out.

🥼 Laboratory Treatments – rVet
If your hospital utilizes our rVet sharing feature, the rVet sharing toggle button is displayed on laboratory chart documents.

Toggling On and Off can be done through the 3-dot menu next to each document on the Chart screen or on the document view itself.
A few things to keep in mind:
- If the rVet Sharing toggle is on, the Diagnostic Chart Document is accessible for viewing in Shareville.
- If the rVet Sharing toggle is off at any time, the Diagnostic Chart Document no longer displays in Shareville.
- Voided results will not display on associated Diagnostic Chart Documents in Shareville.
📓 Please Note: If all results on a laboratory results chart document are voided, the document will no longer display in Shareville at all.
🖨️ Printing Lab Results
You can print the laboratory results document in Instinct in the following ways!
- 3-dot menu next to each document on the Chart screen and the Print button on each document while viewing it on the right side pane. This will automatically download and open the document.

2. Print Record button, which brings up the Visit List.
