Instinct is equipped with smart calculators and medication safety warnings to ensure patients are receiving a safe and effective treatment dose. Chemotherapy medications can also be calculated by using our BSA (m2) calculator with patient safety dose ranges reported in mg/m2.
How This Works:
- When ordering a medication that has been set up in the Product Admin using BSA (m2), an additional dosage result in mg/m2 is shown (more on setting this up below).
- A carefully designed/subtle warning is also displayed if the medication dose is outside specified ranges. You can always bypass the warnings by selecting ‘Ignore + Order’, if needed.

ProTip: If the patient’s weight changes, the dose will not automatically change. The mg/kg and mg/m2 dosage will change on the calculator but a human needs to verify/add the quantity on the Treatment Sheet for patient safety.
How To Turn On the BSA (m2) Calculator:
Medical directors and Admin teams can turn the BSA (m2) calculator on or off in the Instinct Product Admin section:
- Click the Admin button (settings gear) followed by Products.
- Search for the product you’d like to turn the BSA (m2) calculator on or off, and select it from the list. Make sure the Class is ‘Product + Calculator’, otherwise, the calculator will not appear.
- Under the “Medication” section you will see a toggle next to “Allow calculations and safety warnings using BSA (m2)”. Slide right to turn on and slide left to turn off.

How To Edit Patient Safety Warnings:
Medical directors and Admin teams can always add, adjust, and inactivate alerts at any time in the Instinct Product Admin section:
- Click the Admin button (settings gear) followed by Products.
- Search for the product you’d like to add a Patient Safety Warning to and select it from the list. Make sure the Class is ‘Product + Calculator’, otherwise, the calculator will not appear.
- Ensure the BSA (m2) calculator is turned on.
- Under the “Advanced Ordering” section you’ll see a blue button labeled “Add/Edit Safety Warning”. Click this button to add a safety warning based on species.
