You can easily display the Instinct Status Board on large TV screens to improve communication!
📓 Please Note: TV screens should be mounted and hung VERTICALLY. Instinct was built for this and it shows the exact same info vertically as horizontally, but you can fit way more patients!
Users are able to open multiple instances of Instinct on the same computer so you can connect a TV as a second monitor.
In order to do this, you’ll need to open an additional instance of Instinct so that you have you have two Instinct windows open – one for you as a user, and one for the TV screen. On your computer’s taskbar, right-click the Instinct Treatment Plan application, and click on the “Instinct Treatment Plan” to open an additional instance of Instinct.

When the login screen appears, log in using the PIN “0000” (or “000000” if you have a 6 digit PIN) instead of your personal PIN. Using the TV screen PIN will open an instance of Instinct that doesn’t log out automatically.

Users should choose the status board and set the appropriate filters to display on the respective screens. In the example below, the following settings have been applied.
- Tx View has been toggled ON
- The Inpatient board has been selected
- Filter applied to only show patients in the ICU ward
- Filter applied to show only patients in one of the three hospital locations
Please note: your settings/filters will vary depending on where the TV screen is located in the hospital.

Once the filters have been set for the Instinct instance, you can drag and drop the Instinct window to the correct TV screen.

💡 ProTip: Having trouble fitting all your patients on one screen? One option is to separate your ward into 2 sections (think ICU A and ICU B) and utilize the filters based on which side of the ward patients are on!
To display Instinct on a TV screen, you’ll need to ensure that the TV screen is set up as an additional monitor:
- Open Settings
- Click on System
- Click on Display
Then input the following settings as displayed in the below picture:

Once this is set up, you can simply drag one of the Instinct instances to the TV screen.

💡 ProTip: Visit Hardware & Technology Guidelines for more info on displaying Instinct on TVs.
⛓ Link to a laptop/desktop using an HDMI cable
A TV can be successfully connected with a laptop or desktop PC using a standard HDMI cable.
To set the Display to Portrait mode:
- Open Settings
- Click on System
- Click on Display
Once this is set up, return to the primary monitor, then open an instance of Instinct and drag it across to the TV screen for displaying. The primary monitor can then be used to open its own, functional Instinct instance for regular use.
🔗 Link to a PC Stick
A TV can be used as an independent computer monitor with the use of a PC stick, which has the processing capabilities of a standard laptop, without the screen or keyboard. A PC stick plugs into the TV’s HDMI port.
With a PC stick you don’t have to attach a long HDMI cable between the TV and another device, which can free up an otherwise stationary workstation and also reduce accidental TV Mode log-outs, etc.
To set this up, simply plug in the PC stick, and then change your display settings as shown above. To do this, you’ll also need to temporarily link a mouse and keyboard to the TV (for the purpose of logging in, and navigating to change settings.)
Once Instinct TV Mode is up and running, simply disconnect the mouse and keyboard!
🚫 What won’t work?
Setting up a TV using Chromecast is NOT possible at this time.
Amazon Fire TV Stick is also not a good option as we have heard reports of not being able to adjust the display settings.
