If your practice uses Cornerstone, ImproMed or AVImark, these instructions will guide you through the Instinct installation and integration process.
Getting Started
As part of the ‘Install Instinct’ onboarding task, you should have received a link to the install files that you’ll need to complete the Instinct Installation. If you did not receive these files, if you encounter any issues, or have any questions about installing Instinct at your practice, please reach out to the Instinct Support Team at support@instinct.vet.
💡 Important Note: Cornerstone must be on version 9.2 or higher in order for automatic check in/check out to work.
Installation Overview
The Instinct application contains four main components:
- The Instinct Server: hosted in the cloud; the Instinct Team will handle this
- The DataPoint Agent: installed on your on-premise Practice Management Software (PIMS) server; your practices main contact will receive an email from IDEXX to begin the process of installing the agent
- The Instinct Client App: installed on each client machine
- The Instinct Server Token: provides secure access to the Instinct App
📓 Please Note: The Instinct Client App can run on any machine (Mac or PC) connected to the internet. It does not need to be installed on a machine running your PIMS or connected to the on-premise server to work.
Reviewing the Hardware and Technology Guidelines
Our hardware and technology recommendations can be found here: Hardware & Technology Guidelines.
Setting up the Instinct Secure Token
The Instinct team will provide an Instinct token file (instinct_token). This token will provide authentication to the Instinct app.
For in-practice token setup:
The token file will need to be placed on a file server accessible to every installed Instinct app from within the practice’s network. Once the token file is placed on the file server, please let the Instinct team know at support@instinct.vet what the folder path location is (i.e. \servername\folder1).
For remote token setup:
All staff members that need to access Instinct from outside the practice will need to have the Instinct token file located on their computer (PC or Mac). The instructions are below:
Instructions for a PC Computer:
- Download the instinct_token file. (NOTE: Please do not rename or modify the file at all.)
- Open Windows Explorer and navigate to
C:\
. - Copy the instinct_token file from the download location to your computer’s
C:\
(alternatively, click and drag the file to theC:\
).
Instructions for a Mac Computer:
- Download the instinct_token file. (NOTE: Please do not rename or modify the file at all.)
- Store the instinct_token file on your device (such as your “downloads” folder) and DO NOT delete this.
- Open the app and drag/drop the token file onto the app login screen.
📓 Please Note: Step 3 is performed after the Instinct Client App has been installed. Instructions for this are below.
Installing the Instinct Client App
Installing the Instinct Client App is easy. The Instinct Team will provide you with a download link to access the Client App.
- Download the Client App from the provided link.
- Run (double-click) the Client App to install on the client machine.

📓 Please Note: If you are installing the Instinct Client App on a Mac device, you may see a pop-up that states the file can’t be opened because it is from an unidentified developer. If this occurs, simply locate the file in your “Finder” folder, hold down the “control” button on your keyboard, and click the file. Select “Open” from the menu and Instinct will install/create a shortcut on your computer.
- The app will automatically launch after install.

- A new desktop icon will appear for the Instinct Client App (we recommend pinning it to the start menu and taskbar on Windows).

5. Repeat on all desired client machines. If you are installing Instinct in a Mac device, drag/drop the token file onto the app login screen as described in Step 3 under “Instructions for a Mac Computer” above.

💡 Important Note: We recommend that you also allow the following URLs in your network to make sure that Instinct will work as expected: *.intercom.io ; *.instinctvet.io ; *.intercomcdn.com ; *.sentry.io ; *.instinctvet.cloud ; *.instinctshareville.vet ; *.chargeitpro.com ; *.emergepay.chargeitpro.com ; *.assets.emergepay.chargeitpro.com ; *.app.plumbs.com ; *use.typekit.net
One Last Step – Test and Verify
You can now confirm that the Instinct app is installed and opens successfully. The Instinct Team usually brings up your servers and uploads your practice’s data 5 – 7 days before go-live (if not sooner!). Once the servers are up, you can then officially log into Instinct.
If you are testing the app before the servers are up, you will see Instinct’s ‘Auto-Login’ screen. The screen states that ‘Instinct needs to authenticate your practice’. If this screen is appearing before the servers are up, this is expected behavior!
If you see this screen after the servers are available, you’ll want to check to see if the Instinct app has access to the token file as deployed above. If you still have issues logging into Instinct, please contact the Support Team at support@instinct.vet.
Once the Instinct servers are up before go-live, the Instinct team will assist with the following test items after the first instance of the client install is completed to verify that the Instinct App is able to connect to the Instinct server successfully:
- Test basic functions of the Instinct App
- Verify that patient data is being updated via your PIMS
- Test auto-update of Instinct Client App
- Test ancillary items such as confirming readability and screen resolution
